The album begins hard with songs such as Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to create great AOR songs that slowly sink into your head. The album also includes some more jazzy, slower tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The album closes with Great Expectations, a song that combines folk with distorted AOR and could sound like a complete flop, but works amazingly well.

In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band following drug-related charges. The band continued to play with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.

Despite the chaos, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation that was not as successful as IV. The group managed to release an album that topped the charts, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. The album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was also the first to feature the new singer, Simon Phillips.

The more edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the development of the group. Keyboardist David Paich's work was more refined, sharper and less cloying than previously recorded performances.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live performance in Amsterdam that was released as a set of two CDs titled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released their new studio album a few months later and embarked on a world tour to support the album. During this period, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to discover songs that had never been recorded before. The album was released as a double album titled Then and Now in 2001. It was the first album in the band's history that did not include a single song with the word "A" in its title and it included one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity.
